Old addresses missing after importing a seed phrase

When you import an existing seed phrase into Rabby Wallet, your old address and its funds might not show up. Instead, you might see completely different addresses, or you might find some of your old addresses but notice others are missing.

Please note that this is not a bug or an issue with Rabby Wallet. It occurs because the words or settings entered do not exactly match your original wallet's setup.

Here are the most common reasons and fixes.

1) Incorrect seed phrase

A single seed phrase mathematically generates one unique set of addresses. If the words differ from the original phrase, a different set of addresses will be generated.

This usually happens due to one of the following:

  • Mixing up multiple seed phrases: If you have more than one seed phrase, you might accidentally enter the phrase for an alternative wallet.

  • Wrong word order or wrong words: Every word must be in its exact position. Swapping two words or writing down a different word from the standard wallet list will result in different addresses.

How to fix it: Double-check your notes to ensure you have the exact phrase for the specific wallet you want to recover, and verify the exact 1-to-12 word order.

2) Missing a Passphrase (if your original wallet had one)

A passphrase is a rare, advanced feature found in a few specific wallets that adds an extra custom phrase on top of a 12 or 24-word seed phrase. If your original wallet used a passphrase and it is omitted during import, it will show a completely different set of addresses.

How to fix it: If the original wallet used a passphrase, the Rabby Extension must be used to access it, as Rabby Mobile does not support importing seed phrases with passphrases. During the import process on the Extension, the passphrase option must be selected and entered exactly as it was originally created.

3) Wrong address path or list position

A different HD path might have been used for the missing address, or the address may need to be manually selected from further down the generation list.

How to fix it:

  • First, scroll down the address list to see if your missing addresses are there.

  • If you still cannot find your address, click the Settings icon on that screen and try switching between the different HD path options to see if your missing address appears.

  • If your address was created even further down the list, you can adjust the serial number inside those settings to view and check addresses beyond the first 50.

⚠️ Important: Rabby cannot recover or find your funds

Rabby Wallet is a self-custodial wallet. All your keys and wallet creation happen safely on your own computer or phone. Rabby does not save your seed phrases, private keys, or passwords on any external servers.

The Rabby team cannot look up your phrase, change how your addresses are built, or pull up your old account. To get your missing addresses back, you must use the correct recovery phrase and select the right address settings during the import process.
